The unending variety seen in people, businesses, and communities boosts resilience, helps fill gaps, and opens up new possibilities. Because systemic processing “takes a village” of specialists and because larger societies demand more specialists of all kinds, such as doctors, teachers, and engineers, economic functioning depends on an adequate number and diversity of experts performing important jobs. To meet demand, preserve access, choice, and resilience, for instance, it is necessary for the number of supermarkets, schools, and hospitals to increase in line with population size.
