A huge section of the remaining population lives in continual anxiety about slipping into the bottom class, which focuses their concentration on survival earning. The purpose of a permanently unemployed class affects more than just the demographic of unemployed people. On the other hand, if we were to eliminate this class, that portion of the population might decide to shift their emphasis from activities that provide them with the means to survive to activities that provide them with meaning. The economic paradigm would change as a result, shifting from accounting focused on jobs to accounting based on potential.
